What do you most enjoy about your work?

The thing I enjoy most about my work is the “aha!” moment—when a student looks at a problem that seemed intractable and suddenly goes 'aha!'  That moment of discovery is priceless.

What is the most satisfying or rewarding moment of your artistic process?

I’m a stage manager who likes tech rehearsals.  When the physical production elements get handed off to the artists, and we all say, 'Here—it’s all yours now.'

What is the most important quality for any student in the performing arts to cultivate?

Voracious consumption of the works of others.  Every creative statement informs your own work, so seek out everything--movies, art, theatre, dance, the sciences, literature, psychology, etc.

Name a play, film, or recording that has influenced you, and that you would recommend to others.

The film to which I keep returning whenever I need an artistic boost is Graham Greene and Carol Reed’s The Third Man.  As storytelling it is incredibly unpredictable, and as cinema it is maddeningly creative.  The film showed me that bending the rules is far more fascinating than breaking them (and far more potent to an audience).

Something Unexpected:

I am a model train enthusiast (027 scale—I don’t have either the patience or manual dexterity for HO…).  I love creating track layouts and small scale landscapes, and I could sit for hours watching the trains go round and around…
