Minor in Music

The Music Minor is a way for students to continue their musical education while pursuing a different primary major.

Curriculum

With three options to choose from, the minor has many opportunies for students to grow musically:

  • Track A: Involves two literature classes that explore the history of music literature and theory in greater complexity.
  • Track B: Involves one literature class, and allows students to participate in three semesters of ensembles.
  • Track C: Involves a more performance-based curriculum, allowing students to participate in ensembles and take private lessons.

Music Technology Minor: This minor provides a technical-based music experience and expands knowledge about computer and media production. Learn about our Music Technology program and its state-of-the-art facilities.

NEW - Minor in Jazz Studies: This minor provides opportunity to further develop skills in jazz performance techniques and study the history of the genre in concentrated courses.  Students will participate in the marketing side of music-making, as well, with the inclusion of the Introduction to Arts Marketing course.

A Student's Thoughts

"I really enjoy that even though I'm not a music major, I get to learn a lot about music history and theory. Plus, as a musician since elementary school, I love that I've had the opportunity to play in so many ensembles at Virginia Tech. And it's definitely doable with any major. I'm a Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise major, but I'm still about to complete that and my minor in four years! - Lily Nealon, Class of 2015
