Not sure what focus to choose or want to study a little bit of everything? The general degree option allows for even that flexibility. The General Option in the Theatre Arts degree requires fewer hours and is designed for a theatre generalist, often someone who also is pursuing a double major in another area.
The General Option offers a broad study of all areas of theatre and cinema. The B.A. degree is earned after completion of 48 credit hours, including foundation credits in acting, design, production, theatre history, cinema, directing, and Shakespeare.
The program allowed me to pursue two degrees. Exploring all aspects of theatre is encouraged in the department, but I was also fortunate to explore areas outside of theatre that have greatly helped me with my craft. Fight choreography is not a typical performance focus, but at Virginia Tech I was able to learn more specifics about this art and be heavily involved with productions that required stage combat.
