Patricia (Patty) Raun

Professor; Performance and Voice

Patty Raun's primary goal is to promote positive transformation by developing healthy and varied voices - both literal and figurative - in individuals, institutions, and communities.

Currently, her research focuses on the use of the tools of the theatre to develop communication skills in science and technology professionals -- helping them discover ways to be more direct, personal, spontaneous, and responsive.

Patty served as the Director of the School of Performing Arts from 2004-2016.  Since August 2016 she has served as Director of the Center for Communicating Science.  For more information about the CCS please click here.

What is the most important quality for any student in the performing arts to cultivate?

What is your favorite place on campus? Why?

Anywhere that students are.

What is the most satisfying or rewarding moment of your artistic process?

Close reading of a heightened text.  I love uncovering the mysteries of poetic texts and then letting my mind, body, and voice discover what they mean in me.

Who has most influenced you? Why?

My parents.  They were/are remarkable people and I hope, someday, to be as compassionate, grounded, and responsible as they.

Something Unexpected:

  • I have always owned a siamese cat or two. Right now Sergei and Katusha are numbers 7 and 8.
  • My husband and I were introduced by an Alexander teacher.
  • Among my prized possessions are hand written letters to me, from Barbara Kingsolver, Jules Feiffer, and Helen Gurley Brown.
