"Poe’s Shadows" uses the 360-degree cyclorama and spatial audio capabilities of the Cube in the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech to create an immersive theatrical experience. Drawing from two of Edgar Allan Poe’s most well-known works, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven,” the installation explores what happens when literary texts are lifted from the “page to the stage” and then reimagined through the use of new technology.

Audience members will hear recordings of the texts performed by Virginia Tech students (selections curated and directed by theatre faculty members Amanda Nelson and Natasha Staley, with English faculty member Ashley Reed).  Virtual shadow puppets will be projected onto the cyclorama (designed by visual arts faculty member Meaghan Dee). Spatial sound, designed and engineered by MFA in Theatre student Tanner Upthegrove (under the guidance of music faculty member Charles Nichols), will emanate through the space, creating a full immersive experience for audience members.

A series of short expert talks on related and complementary topics called Poe Ponderings will be held in conjunction with the installation. A digital exhibition on Poe and Poe’s Shadows will be showcased in the Athenaeum in the Newman Library.
