What gives you the most satisfaction as a teacher?

As a teacher I am always happy to see my students achieving their dreams.  Everyone has dreams, and I believe that it is my job to help my students figure out how to make their dreams become a reality.  So many of us dream, but so few of us take the time to figure out how to realize our dreams.

Who has most influenced you? Why?

The biggest influence on me professionally would have to be my father.  My father is not a musician and knows little about the arts, but is one of the most intelligent and creatively-minded people I know.  His no-nonsense approach and dry sense of humor helped shape the artist and teacher I have become.  Musically I have been most influenced by Robert Marcellus who was the principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra for many years under George Szell.  When I was in high school I would listen to Mr. Marcellus’ recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto every single night before falling asleep.  All 30 minutes of it!  I must have done that for at least three years, every single day, trying to hear absolutely every single thing he did in that masterful recording!
