Summer Arts Festival

With the joint efforts of Virginia Tech's School of Performing Arts and the Town of Blacksburg, we are proud to present the  2018 Summer Arts Festival's Calendar of Events.  This summer marks our 27th year of this cultural and entertaining event for the Virginia Tech Campus and the New River Valley!  This Festival has become a tradition that is now solidly established.  We have developed a very strong audience base for the Summer Arts Festival over the past 26 years, and with the renewed support of Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg, the Festival continues to be a welcome tradition to the university and the community.

From the legendary writers, Bock and Harnick (Fiddler on the RoofShe Loves Me) and George Abbott, comes the classic feel-good musical, Fiorello!. Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this triumphant show is one of only eight musicals to have won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama. With crooked double-crossers and manipulators working the political puppets, "Tammany Hall" is in desperate need of an honest man to snip the strings. With guts and perseverance, Fiorello is just the man to put a bright, new shine on the Big Apple. His rise to power is a strained journey as LaGuardia does his best to retain his continuously positive outlook on life while navigating the ups and downs of his life in civil service. Set against the backdrop and beat of New York City in the midst of change, Fiorello! is a witty, sweet valentine to a little man with a big heart that will surely attract and charm audiences.

Honoring the Path (New Mixed Media Paintings) by John Wiercioch

Roanoke artist, John Wiercioch strives to create paintings with a compelling presence and sustaining inner harmony that doesn’t feel orchestrated.  His abstract works integrate plasters from his work as a custom wall finisher and include the essence of colors, soft pencil marks and delicate glazes to create a reconciling of earth and spirit.John envisions his paintings as songs without lyrics that embrace the interconnectedness of all of earth’s inhabitants, and he works to find that “inner glow” within a painting. John holds an M.F.A. from Radford University, and held the position of director of education for the Art Museum of Western Virginia for several years.  Since 2000 he has been the sole proprietor of his company specializing in residential wall painting of custom finishes.

Dates of Exhibit:  June 8-July 28, 2018
